Icelandic rose pattern´s collection > My knitting book

The book Rósaleppaprjón í nýju ljósi is the result of my research on floral patterned knitted insoles used in sheep ans fish skin shoes in Iceland. My goal is to preserve an old, unique Icelandic tradition that was being lost and try to give it a new life. The book contains contemporary knitting projects all based on traditional insoles motifs.

The 26 patterns are made up on the basis of the designs and color schemes seen in the old inserts and are an attempt to work with the old knitting tradition in an innovative way. I have tried to remain true to the original color schemes of the inserts I chose, and the traditionnal methods used in making them. The inserts reappear in these new garments in various ways. Sometimes, I repeat the same motif several times, making a continuous pattern. At other times, I let the motif determine the shape the garment takes. In still other patterns, I let inspiration decide how certain motifs will be arranged.

The book got an Award at the Women Litterary Festival of Iceland in 2007, and a grant from the Icelandic Litterature Fund in 2008. The english version, Icelandic Color Knitting (Rose-pattern inserts knitting in a new light), is available in Iceland and the Scandinavian countries at Salka forlag. Outside Iceland, it´s available at Search Press Ltd under the title Icelandic Knitting using Rose Patterns. A Russian version is also to be published by Ikristina. Finally, a French version, Le tricot jacquard islandais ou le renouveau de la semelle tricotée islandaise is available as a PDF download. It´s a text-only version without pictures or charts.
