Some known theories.
You might want to know a lot of things before (or after) reading Óðsmál (Odsmal). Here are to be found some known theories, accepted and/or not accepted.
and many other interesting
noble feature of paganry (heathenry, ásatrú
(asatru)) is the self-reliability of every individual.

lot of books has been written, a lot of research has been done.
They seem to reveal that a great culture was destroyed by an
invading, southern culture that was used by kings and tyrants as a
tool of their dominance-urge. (Christianity; based on
some ideas from theocracy of Jews (Moses-based), The Roman Empire,
now under a new name as a guise for their underlying dominance
urge: Theocracy. A smart Roman strategy it is.)
sincerely ask heathens to note, as we have a lot of mix-up with
monotheistic inventions and dominance-devices:
is not for the dead but for the living. Einherjar in
Valhöll is a state of consciousness, a stage of
enlightenment, or Cosmic Conciousness, of a man in one of his

owns) can be taken as mankind. This is theosophy of the Norse
culture, a field that is waiting for young scholars who sincerely
want to probe deeper into its values and deep meaning. Those who
undersand the Vedas also understand the terms and symbols in
Some people call themselves asatruar, are robust and even burn churches. These people do not care the least about knowing the true essence of heathenry. Some of these men only reinforce the image that was glued upon pagans: i.e. that they were uncouth barbarians. This is not a good thing, as that is a lie. Their behavior and views are based on a deliberate lie and cunnning misinterpretations.
Óðsmál (Odsmal) corrects misinterpretations of history. I hope that scholars of the future help to do that.
Viking period probably was the end of this heathen cult, and even
decadence and hollowness were possibly occurring by that time as
signs of decline of the original heathen cult.
But we recomend:
the correction of the wrongly imprinted "history", you
great cult, pure spirituality and profound philosophy -- heathenry
and the wisdom found in edda -- was almost killed by the strategic
propaganda of the church telling us, wrongly, that Christianity is
"evolved" and heathenry "primitive" . The
warfare is called an "evolved religion" as to hide the
real purpose: Imperialism. Originally the Roman Empire was dressed
up in the garb of the "spotless" papal dress of
infallibility. Theocracy is a cunning tool. Warfare and
spirituality are opposites, and calling both a "religion"
is the strategy of deliberate confusion.
May we have the luck to correct the made-up history about heathenry, because monotheistic theocracy is a step backwards for humanity's spiritual growth, and we should understand again the real purpose of life, man's evolution and the cycles of our world.
Some theories grounded on research state that originally the heathens were peaceful vegetarians. Climate probably was very different from what it is now.
Archeological findings show a long history of the northern culture.
Some claim the Frey cult to have been that of vegetarians, that never would harm another living thing, be it an animal or a man. They probably revered mother Earth as an all-yielding, living creature, and revered all of life that is of her, including men.
read on, if you are interested to know some terms relevant in the
book Óðsmál (Odsmal), that is a pioneer work in
this field. Óðsmál (Odsmal) is said to be the
greatest thesis ever written on the profoundness of ginnungagap of
heathenry. It actually is a revolutionary book on the theosophy
Freyjukettir means: cats of Freyja. Her cats are her vehicle; thus: the power of love.
Please read on if you are interested in (the following) bits and pieces of old theories:
Óðinn (Odinn, Wodin, from Sanskrit "yodhin") and Frigg (Frigga, from Sanskrit "priya", resemble much the same as Óður (Odur) and Freyja: The male element as a spirit - a spouse to the female power, the universal unbounded love - is the beautiful idea that they - the male power and the female power - support each other. One without the other is not a full life. Purusha–Prakriti, Ying-Yang, and also found in Platon's writings (now not purely understood by all philosophers, though, and misunderstood by some feminists, as they have a christianity-based inferiority complex.).
, Frigg, Óðinn
Freyr (god of love and fertility) and Gerður (Gerdur, growth,
garden, food for us and our bairns (children)) are only a half
life one without the other. (Freyr, Gerður (Gerdur), Skírnir
(Skirnir), heathen yule (yule-tide, X-mas) is explained in Chatter
5 in Óðsmál (Odsmal).)

claim Æsir (Aesir, the Asa) to have immigrated from Asia
(-thus that name-) bringing with them their culture. So stated
Snorri Sturluson in his prose Edda, (Snorra-Edda, Edda Snorra
Sturlusonar) and in his Heimskringla,.
Also theories of others point out the striking resemblance between terms in ásatrú (asatru) and The Ancient Vedic Culture. Words in ásatrú (asatru) are directly from Sanskrit (-such as Edda from Veda-).
Óðsmál (Odsmal) is meant to open our eyes for the profoundness and beauty of the heathen religion, our precious and mistreated inheritance. (Click *NEW* to read about new, original theories to be found in the pioneer work, Óðsmál (Odsmal.)
If it holds true that Æsir (the asa) as men came from Asia, they probably brought with them their ancient culture to Europe. This is thought to have been some 7000 - 7500 years ago.
This goes for Æsir (Aesir from Asia) as men as history. What about æsir (aesir, asa) as gods in ásatrú (asatru)? Are they worldly idols or real and profound divinities? (Please read on:)
Hávamál (Havamal) and Völuspá (Voluspa) are sacred texts and contain pure wisdom. They were most likely sung or chanted. Some brave man wrote all the poems down under Christianity. We do not understand their profound meaning now-a-days. We do not understand their depth. We have been taught for centuries to look upon them either as heresy or only silly, old myths. We are proud of them as old culture, and a lot of research is going on. It is not touching on the very point in it, and that is because very few people understand the sphere of life that the sacred texts of the North are teaching. In fact they are a treasure if we want to understand the profound wisdom waiting for us there. Óðsmál (Odsmal) is the revolutionary work needed to open this field up for scholars, researchers and the common man.
ethics of heathenry is the most beautiful I know.
double standard ethic is found in this northern inheritance.
our precious inheritance, heathenry, is now of great importance to
us. It is ancient and still relevant, because it is pure and
*) Some historians claim the famous peace between Æsir (aesir, asa) and Vanir to be telling us that the prevailing culture of the North accepted the depth of the Vedic culture in addition to the Frey cult's profound nature feeling and man-nature co-operation.
Only later (some thousands of years later) some aggressive cultures were imported by kings and tyrants and used as tools of oppression in Europe. That stuff (the southern culture and the Roman Empire under a new name: Christ's bride (the church)) was threat-imposed upon us. These papal rulers destroyed or exploited concepts (such as yule (X-mas, Christmas) and Easter, which are age old heathen feasts; Man and Nature; Skírnismál (Skirnismal), the heathen yule). These papal rulers burned sacred trees, killed men and burned men alive at the stake. Everything sacred to heathen men was said to be of some devil (a concept alien to us).
Some claim valkyries in northern mythology, the war maidens, to have been invented by the influence of aggressive religions. The fierce battle of good (iron angles) and bad (devils) might have influenced the peaceful culture that heathenry most likely was at that time. Luther and his protest against idolatry of the Catholics, is known to have been all devil-worship and war against natural human pleasures. It you really would like to read horror and disgusting porno, try Luther.
Goddess Freyja is, by some men, thought to be Nerthus, as Freyja means The Lady, and perhaps the name of Nerthus was too sacred to be spoken.
Vanir - gods other than æsir (aesir, asa) - are perhaps the ancient Frey cult. Freyja is Vanadís (Vana-dis). The word Venus is the same word etymologically as Vanir. (You can read about stars and gods and goddesses in Chatter (chapter) 19 in Óðsmál (Odsmal), and names of the days and gods and goddesses in Chatter 17; names of stars Ch.19 and Ch.3.
<---Afrodite rises up from the sea. Afros means foam. Freyja can also mean foam, froth.
Njörður (Njordur) the Norse sea god, is thought to have been goddess Nerthus, now using a different gender as gods sometimes do. Nerthus has very much to do with bathing in the sea, symbolizing renewal. Symbolizing the birth of a new life, birth of all life on earth. Here we have a picture of Afrodite the Greek. She is a goddess of fertility of earth and goddess of love and beauty. She is much associated with love and all living nature. Afros means sea foam. Afrodite: she who ascends from the sea, as all life began in the sea. Also every man is born out of the water in the mother womb. Some 350 million years ago life is supposed to have been in the ocean.
The womb and the tomb are symbols of the same thing: one of the cycles in which everything in heathenry evolves.
Straight line in life (one life, one doomsday, one chance, one redeemer, one prophet, one God, one womb, one tomb) does not belong in heathenry. Everywhere cycles are to be found in heathenry. Cycles are in nature. Cycles are in life. Cycles are in the evolution of mankind.
the dawn of enlightenment is gradually coming to men on earth. Not
all of us at the same time, but we are rediscovering our innermost
Truth, we are rediscovering the profound meaning of Vedic
literature, we rediscover the great knowledge that was known
before the monotheistic disaster. We are starting to realise that
heathenry is more profound and beautiful and true than the
monotheistic power tools. That what was is superior not inferior,
profound not barbaristic, it is profound knowledge not
superstition and not ignorance.
Hell and heaven (used in monotheistic religions) are entirely other concepts than fate, good, evil, Hel and Valhöll (Valhoell) in the old European culture. Óðsmál (Odsmal) explains it in Ch.20. Theories do exist on where the hell-and-heaven-ideas come from originally. Hell as punishment (for sins and for not believing) and heaven as reward (for worshipping the right god and obeying his (or actually the prophet's)) rules, commandments, bans. etc. are smart gadgets used on credulous men.
To be sheep in a herd obeying a shepherd is not possible for a heathen man. He is all-responsible for himself, his actions and his surroundings, and he is a part of nature as are the gods (æsir, the asa, and Vanir).
Bans and musts, creeds and dogmas, do not belong. Only good advice for those asking and ready to listen.

gods of profound gods for: God as a device for the urge
The good way to find ones god or gods or goddess or goddesses is to probe within.
All the power is within me and within you. Holding true that someone outside and above is ruling your life, deprives you of responsibility, and can be (is) called dope for slaves.
Urður (Urdur), Verðandi (Verdandi) and Skuld, the three
norns of fate, can not be made responsible. (For that see Chatter

Urður (Urdur) is what I do. Verðandi (Verdandi) the
process, or lapse of time, until Skuld, who is Debt, brings your

(Tyr) the age old sky god is every individual's sense of justice.
Justice and righteousness are to be found within.
Do you realise that some men call it a deed and a duty to kill other men only because they refuse to believe in the god for whose exploiter they are warriors?
God Þór (Thor) gives farmers and laborers power. Óðsmál (Odsmal) states that this power is to be found within. Þór (Thor) is each individual's profound might and main.
Also that goddess Eir is the tranquillity, peace and quiet within --- She is the best of healers.
Sif is Þór's (Thor's) wife. She is a beautiful concept too. As you know Þór (Thor) is the god of farmers, - his beloved is the crop, the harvest. The golden hair of Sif, Þór's (Thor's) wife, is the golden ripe field. "Gold and green forests" is a heathen proverb for the yielding of Nature.

Óðsmál (Odsmal) is meant to promote research in ethnology, as Grýla (Gryla) might be Gerður (Gerdur) from Skírnismál (Skirnismal in the Edda), jólasveinar (jolasveinar, yule-boys; julenisse) might be our ancestors in disguise, as they are said to steal food in Iceland. But that actually might have been prohibited food-giving to reverent ancestors.
The eleven golden apples from Skírnismál (Skirnismal) are still to be found in Europe, only people now-a-days do not know where they come from. Apples at yule-tide are very heathen. So is the Christmas tree, the lights, the presents, etc. It was borrowed and recycled as it could not be suffocated. (Click man and nature)
Interesting books have been written about the fact that everything in the newer, revelatory, monotheistic religions is to be found in ancient myths, and has been used (exploited) to appeal to the people. Every story in The Books has been traced back to its origin.

borrowed the god from the Jews, killed Jews in the name of that
god (and still have Jew-problems, as Jews are great revenger and
stick tight together) because Pontius Pilatus the Roman
washed his hands and the Jews sentenced Jesus (that never was a

towards that god of the Jews - and later the very god of the
Christians too, when Jesus became the new Roman emperor and the

Moses is known to have picked a worldly god for his new people, not a nation then but a mixture of slaves in Egypt. Moses, brought up as a prince, had no status as a prince and no nation to rule. He promised the slaves (later Hebrews) land and riches from that newly revealed god. He killed all his disobedient men (tens of thousands) as his new god told him to do. He actually sometimes told the god not to be so harsh as he got when he was angry.
Moses knew how to read and write but Mohammed claimed to be illiterate and Jesus never wrote anything so we do not know if he was a learned man or not.

sometimes confuse social rules and ethics with religions.
priests in Iceland claim to learn disdain of women in the

sacred to heathen men have been treated unjustly:
OM (in Hinduism and Buddhism) is the huge Ymir in northern mythology, the same thing as The Big Bang for scientists. Óðsmál (Odsmal) explains delightfully and in a lucid way the birth of a world, from religious and scientific points of view (that turns out to be one and the same).
All our curiosity is man's search for Truth and his origin.
In the sacred texts of the North we see that people were reborn because of love. This is interpreted as a heathen view of men living again and again on earth. Einherjar in Valhöll (Valhalla) seem to reinforce that ancient knowledge. They play fighting games, fall dead, are resurrected every evening, throw a party, sleep, wake up next morning for more fighting games. Reincarnation, each individual's path towards perfection.
research that I know has been done on kalpa (on one hand) and (on

(ragnaroek), what on earth is that?
Eotens and gods form a cycle. Jötnar (joetnar; eotens, giants) are explained in Chatter (Chapter) 7 in Óðsmál (Odsmal). The fight between gods (creative power) and eotens (destructive powers) are the perpetual cycles in life. Even a decaying body cell is fighting its ragnarök (ragna-roek). Ragnarök (ragnaroek) is not as some doomsday that some people might have heard about. Völuspá (Voluspa), the main kvæði (kvaedi) of the sacred texts of the North in Edda, is all about these cycles in life that come with life and of which we are a part.
Óðsmál (Odsmal) you will find quotations from
Greek mythology and Greek words etymologically.
The quest of the human spirit is to find Truth. Searching for Truth will be our quest forever.
Mary is said to be an answer of the church to our great loss when
the great goddess was banned and patriarchy took over.
and female power and all girls as incarnations of universal love
(Freyja) in Northern myths and theosophy of heathenry, are equal
to the male power. Every myth in the Eddas (and even women as
characters in the Icelandic Sagas (written under Christianity))
seem to point this out to us. Luckily, heathen philosophy has been
a very strong element in this sense in Iceland - and still is.
Legally speaking, the human rights of women in the northern countries are the best in the world. Any woman can, under any circumstances, wherever she chooses, express her views on whatever she has an opinion on. In some countries this kind of behavior of women would call for punishment or death onto them. But here in the North it is actually expected of women to have an opinion on whatever they wish, and openly and/or publicly to give it away freely. For us it is natural human rights. Robust, northern ladies, as well as our robust men, bloom in self-esteem. They are ministers, MPs, whatever.
Hope you enjoy reading Óðsmál (Odsmal). It is written by a wise woman.
is so befitting to allow people to have access to a book on the
profoundness and beauty of heathenry now, as more and more people
are asking about it. The pure theosophy is no-where explained or
taught, and many people have got the wrong idea (--due to some
10-20 centuries of brainwashing and indoctrination). Ásatrú
(asatru) is in some places treated as museum-junk only,
interesting for ethnology research perhaps, -- if it is mentioned
at all in schools and universities.
Mjöllnir, su-asti-ka, our means to rid us of trolls of ignorance.
