THE ICELANDIC MOUNTAINBIKE CLUB

Independence day June 17th
On June 17th Icelanders celebrate their independence. The biggest celebration is in Reykjavik but there are celebrations everywhere and you should join in if you´re in Iceland. In the morning it´s quite formal, followed by a day for the whole family with all kinds of activities and in the evening there is music and dancing in the streets.
In 1994 Icelanders celebrated 50 years of independence at the site of the worlds oldest parliament, Þingvellir. Of course everybody tried to get there in their own cars, resulting in a massive traffic jam the likes of which we have never seen before. Thousands spent the whole day in their car listening to the celebrations on the radio, never seeing anything.
Of course The Icelandic Mountainbike Club cycled the 50km from Reykjavik and made it in shorter time than many of the cars.
